He was singled out at the American Urological Association’s National Meeting’s session on infertility and microsurgery as one of the top ten innovators in urological microsurgery for the development of the mini-incision microsurgical vasoepididymostomy.
Dr. Werthman is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and Director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Vasectomy Reversal in Los Angeles, CA. He is also a past president of the Los Angeles Urologic Society and a former Chief of Urology at Century City Hospitals.
Dr. Werthman obtained his medical degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, achieving the distinction of class valedictorian as the top-ranked student in his class for all four years. During his schooling, Dr. Werthman won four academic scholarships and was awarded the Medical Staff Award for Highest Attainment on the National Boards medical examination.
He completed his specialty residency and fellowship in urology at the University of California, Los Angeles and was subsequently bestowed a visiting fellowship in male infertility and microsurgery at The Baylor College in Houston, TX. He won the Procter & Gamble Resident’s Essay First Prize Award for his research on gene therapy.
Insistent upon just about everyone calling him “Phil,” Dr. Werthman is an avid sports fan who played basketball in his undergraduate years at the State University of New York – Binghamton. He enjoys skiing and cycling, holds a black belt and practices traditional Shotokan Karate.
An analyst of historical perspectives on military operations both domestic and abroad, Dr. Werthman obtained a Masters Degree in Military History from Norwich University and works closely with the military.
